From the Chair - August 2020

Updated: Aug 14, 2020

Dear Supporters,

The winter of discontent is over- or so we thought just a few days ago.

We are now celebrating a major milestone in our move to the city centre. This project, started so enthusiastically seven plus years ago by Philip Aldridge, Ross and the team, and now finally carried into action by Barbara, Ross and their team. The signing of the Development Agreement is possibly the biggest decision we have made since coming to The Shed and was signed off on 7 July. The concept design period begins now with the expectation of the new theatre being opened in the Performing Arts Precinct of the CBD in 2023.

Seventy Supporters joined together for a mid-winter lunch in the foyer a few weeks ago. They were entertained by the highly amusing Court Jesters and then regaled by the Chief Executive herself. We all came away full of good food wine and spirit. Humour certainly is the best medicine.

So successful was the day that we feel we will repeat it towards the end of the year, possibly with a Christmas theme.

We have taken the first steps in planning for the 50th anniversary of The Court. Yes, in April next year we will have been operating as The Court Theatre for half a century!

I think this may be something of a record in New Zealand. This anniversary will also be marked with our name change - Friends of The Court Theatre. We will certainly keep you informed of these plans so we can celebrate together.

Please look out for the new shows running at The Shed, with a variety of material being performed in the foyer and on the stage. Something for everyone.

Just a note about Covid. The team at The Court Theatre will continue to update their website with the latest information.

Remember, “You need three things in theatre- the play, the actors and the audience, and each must give something” - Kenneth Haigh.

Best wishes,

Annie Bonifant
