From the Chair - December 2020

Dear Supporters,

Wow! . . . . . . just . . . WOW!

This was the heading for Theatreview’s review after the opening night of Jersey Boys. It went on to say, “The depth of talent on the Court Theatre stage is simply astonishing. Who needs Broadway or The West End?” What a thrilling start to our new season.

The Court is back.

But that’s not the only “wow” in this festive season. At the end of November, we revealed the concept plans for our new theatre. The overall concept has been released in the media, and construction will begin in February 2022. The new theatre is most impressive, incorporating some exciting features. For example, the new auditorium will have three tiers of seating wrapping around the front of the stage, with the option to remove rows of seats to further extend the stage right into the audience. The Education Room at the back of the building faces north and opens out to the internal courtyard area. There are lots more fabulous details, but this is just a sneak peek to whet your appetite.

For those of you who are ushers, we have clarified the confusion over vouchers and complimentary tickets. We have drawn up a document that delineates the allocation of vouchers and this will be pinned up on the notice board in the usher’s corner. The theatre management, as a way of showing their gratitude, have generously offered ushers the staff discount on drinks from the bar.

Planning for our 50th anniversary continues. The Supporters’ event on Sunday 25 April (Anzac day) will include entertainment, cake cutting and the launch of our new name, Friends of The Court Theatre. You will be entertained in a debate by theatre personalities old and new arguing the pros and cons of some contentious and humorous moots! As Supporters and the backbone of The Court Theatre, I hope you will come and celebrate the occasion with us. Make sure you save the date in your diaries.

It seems after a rather extraordinary year with a pretty grim outlook, we have thankfully moved on and into the festive season with burgeoning success on the stage, a new theatre launched, boundless optimism and much Christmas cheer.

I hope this finds you in good spirits preparing for Christmas and some wonderful summer holidays.

Best wishes,

Annie Bonifant
